Why We Walk

Every walk is led by a bereaved family member who refuses to stay silent. Fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45.

Before You Go

What to Expect

What Happens at a Walk

Most walks open with a short stage program of 30 to 40 minutes: a welcome, a family leader sharing their story, and local speakers. Then everyone walks together, usually 1 to 2 miles.

Many walks also hold a community resource fair, with tables from recovery centers, nonprofits, and local partners. Check your walk’s Mobilize page for the agenda, the walk length, and parking.

Walking in Memory of Someone

You are welcome here. Many walks set up a memorial display, and families are invited to bring a photo, a sign, or a pair of shoes that represents their loved one for “The Shoes They Left Behind.”

The Families Network connects you with families who understand.

Official Stage Guide

Walk Day Program: Run of Show

The stage portion is a sacred part of Walk for Lives, where stories are heard and lifesaving information is shared. Follow this guide, and adapt it where your community needs it.

A speaker addresses a seated crowd from the Walk for Lives stage in Orlando
Orlando, FL · July 11, 2026

Main Considerations

  • Hold the stage portion at the start, or split it between the start and the end.
  • Use an emcee from local media (TV, radio, or print), or someone confident speaking in public.
  • Everyone must be able to hear. Test the sound system ahead of time and use a handheld mic. Small speakers are cheap to rent and often donated.
  • Hold the timeframes. Brief your emcee to walk up gently when a speaker runs long.
  • Recommended speakers: a family leader, a friend, law enforcement, and a mental health professional. An elected official is optional.

Speaking Schedule, 30 to 40 Minutes
